Formwork Definition
Formwork is temporary or permanent molds into which concrete or similar materials are poured. In the context of concrete construction, the falsework supports the shuttering molds.
Types of formwork
- Traditional timber formwork
This type of formwork is easy to manufacture on site using timber and plywood or moisture-resistant particleboard. It is widely used because of its low cost. But its life cycle is short and takes a lot of time to manufacture for larger structures. Because of its versatility and ease of manufacture, it is often used for small and complex components to save costs.
- Engineered Formwork System
This formwork is fabricated from prefabricated modules with metal frames. Therefore, its bearing capacity and resistance to decay and fire are extremely good.
The best advantage of this type of formwork is that it can be reused up to 2000 times. Its bearing capacity, decay resistance and fire resistance are extremely good because of the construction of a metal frame (steel or aluminum). Besides, this type of formwork is easy to install which helps speed up construction.
- Re-usable plastic formwork
This type of formwork is used for simple concrete structures, it is light in weight and quite robust. Suitable for use in low-cost projects, mass housing schemes.
- Permanent Insulated Formwork
This formwork is installed on site, usually of insulating concrete forms. It is kept after concreting is completed and offers advantages such as heat insulation, sound insulation, etc.
- Stay-In-Place structural formwork systems
Similar to Permanent Insulated Formwork. This formwork is assembled at the construction site and retained with the role of bearing and preventing the impact of the environment. It is molded with prefabricated fiber reinforced plastic, hollow tubes and commonly used for columns and piers.
Different from the above-mentioned types of formwork, this type of formwork uses lightweight and high-strength panels. It helps to increase the flexibility of concrete and create distinct forms of construction.
Definition and uses of Formwork drawings
Formwork drawing is an execution plan for preparing formwork panels for on-site concreting. It includes details of the material, dimension, shape, and installation of the formwork to create a solid mass and pour the desired concrete shape.
Formwork drawings should include details of:
Formwork and formwork joints | Size and spacing of framing |
Ties | Sealing procedures |
Details of proprietary fittings or systems proposed to be used | Sealing procedures |
Formwork drawings example
- Concrete wall formwork
- Concrete column formwork
- Formwork for concrete slab
Formwork Design Engineer
Civil engineers are the creators of formwork drawings, which include precise information about dimensions, layout, sections and views of building parts based on the execution plan.
In order to produce accurate drawings, these engineers must have sufficient knowledge and experience when deploying drawings according to any standard.
