Shop Drawing Is Easy? Factors That Lead To An Unsatisfactory Shop Drawing

Shop Drawing Is Easy?

Shop drawings are used to detail the objects from the design stage to the construction site, in other words, we will use these shop drawings in construction work. Therefore, a shop drawing must have absolute accuracy as well as a scientific presentation that is easy to understand and easy to see. Help people working at the construction site easily deploy, minimize errors, avoid dam and rebuild, which wastes time and costs. Whether you are a new or experienced engineer, creating a standard, approved shop drawing is a complex job, it requires high attention to detail and good presentation.

Factors That Lead To An Unsatisfactory Shop Drawing

When we first started coordinating with foreign customers, we also had a few small problems that led to unexpected mistakes. Based on that, we give a few reasons why shop drawings are unsatisfactory.

1. Differences in languages, symbols, regulations presented in drawings between countries, constractors

Nowadays with the digital boom in the AEC (automation of design) industry, people all over the world can participate in the same project easily. Many constractors in the world cooperate with each other to achieve efficiency as well as optimize costs in the best way. Because of such diversity, it presents a significant challenge for the parties involved, one of which is the language barrier. Currently English is the main and widely used language around the world, but most of the symbols, fonts, and layout regulations depend on the country where the project is located.

Differences in culture and technical standards make it take a while for the coordinating parties to adapt. In that process, if the information interaction is hindered, it will easily lead to misunderstandings and incorrect actions. Causing repeated editing, time-consuming, especially costly, and discrediting project participants.

2. Too many things in one drawing

Cramming a lot of information into one drawing is also a common occurrence in the process of making shop drawings. This may be a request from the investor, the contractor to reduce the number of shop drawings. The cramming of a lot of information makes it difficult for engineers, who have to calculate and outline the presentation to ensure the requirements are set. This is not easy, sometimes there is too much information overlapping each other in the same place, engineers have to break the rules, making it difficult for construction workers to read drawings on site.

3. Information control (RFA, RFI) is not good

The volume of information exchanged in a project is very large, without a strict management process, it is easy to ignore feedback or update incorrect information from each stakeholder. In addition, internal information interaction is also a very important work. Poor communication and internal coordination can also lead to serious errors and cost losses.

4. The drawing error checking stage is not good

Many teams of engineers doing shop drawings do not clarify the roles of each team member. Overlapping tasks, one person can take on many responsibilities such as rendering, deploying shop drawings, checking errors and then correcting themselves,… leading to many errors or difficult to detect their own errors, creating pressure ineffective workforce.

5. Lack of experience in implementing shop drawings

New engineers do not have much experience in shaping, presenting, exchanging and managing information. Careless training process can lead to many errors in the implementation process.

Conclusion

There are many reasons for making mistakes in developing shop drawings, to have a quality drawing requires as much experience as possible. The team leader must clarify the ability and role to effectively assign work to each member of the team, and organize receiving and responding to information in a scientific manner. Do not cram too much information in one drawing, it is recommended to separate or combine objects reasonably. Engineers should learn many skills, experience, knowledge, create many measures to improve working capacity. Create a favorable environment for members to exchange and help each other in their work.
